What is it like to see with a multifocal implant?
Imagine a calm pond and throw a stone into the water. You will notice that several spherical waves are formed around the insertion point. The structure of the multifocal lens is structured similar to this harmonious picture. Nine or twelve rings allow reading at a distance of 30cm or 40cm (this corresponds to most reading distances), the remaining optical distribution on the lens surface serves for good vision for the distance. The concentric structure of the lens optics allows two visual impressions of the eyes to be superimposed to form an overall picture. This overlay blur is noticeable initially. The fact that our brain learned to retouch certain blurring at a young age is the only way to make this principle work.
Taking into account day and night vision
The more different optics the light has to pass through, the more loss is the direct result. The same principle can be applied to different focus levels. The fine, concentric ring steps regulate the incidence of light (energy distribution) and the transition in favor of the individual visual areas. There is less light at night or at dusk. The pupils (iris diaphragms) open so that despite less light enough information reaches the retina and vision is possible even in the dark. The artificial multifocal lens is designed in such a way that with a normal open pupil of about 2 – 3 mm in diameter there is enough light stimulation so that the far and near focusing works successfully. It is therefore possible to read comfortably during the day and to see into the distance. When the pupils are wide open (night or dusk), the light is used for distant vision. In everyday life, this means that reading in poor lighting conditions becomes more tedious for nearby people. On the other hand, disturbing light sources such as headlights or traffic signals appear less disruptive. For everyday use this means: good lighting improves reading quality!
When is the right time for a multifocal implant?
So that the advantage of a multifocal lens can be used profitably, the eye should already be in a presbyopic situation. This is definitely the case from the age of 50. In addition, the eye has already undergone important physiological changes at this point in time, which are beneficial compared to an operation on its own natural eye lens.
Choosing a multifocal lens
We have not yet succeeded in copying nature in its perfection. A multifocal lens represents a very good compromise. The detailed preliminary examination, the following consultation, finding out your expectations and accompanying and supporting after the operation are important prerequisites for success and satisfaction with the newly acquired vision for far and near. Give yourself and your new vision a few months to meet your needs and adapt to the custom.
Femto laser support
